MOVIE OF THE WEEK #1 (2/4/11): THE ROOMMATE

"Eat your heart out, Jennifer Jason Leigh!" Rebecca (Leighton Meester) gets close - perhaps a little too close - to her new college roommate Sara Matthews (Minka Kelly) in a scene from the new psychological thriller THE ROOMMATE.

THE PLOT: A movie that tells you everything you need to know about it in its trailer, The Roommate stars Minka Kelly as Sara Matthews, a freshman student at a California university. Despite recently breaking up with Jason (Matt Lanter) after their original plan doesn't work out, Sara is still excited about her new surroundings - and the always ready to party Tracy (Aly Michalka) and her successful fashion designer friend Irene (Danneel Harris) help a lot.

What Sara may not be ready for, however, is her new roommate, Rebecca (Leighton Meester). For Rebecca takes a quick liking to Sara ... And in her case, when she calls you a "best friend forever," she means it.

THE TAKE: Ever seen the movie Single White Female that came out back in the 90s? Seriously. Have you ever seen it? Because unless the answer is "no," you literally have no reason to see The Roommate. I mean, this movie is nearly a BLATANT rip-off of that movie in a college setting ... And here's the worst part - it's a HORRIBLY DONE rip-off to boot!

Meester, Kelly and company may have some acting talent ... But WOW is it not evident in this movie. Throw in some of the most inane, juvenile and terribly foreshadowing dialogue, directing and editing (there's a split-second shot of lawn sprinklers - why?!) and "crazy girl wreaking havoc" clichés and you have The Roommate. Poor Billy Zane ... Did he not save any of his Titanic money?!

PARTING SHOT: If you want to do yourself a favor, kick The Roommate out of your movie plans faster than a feuding reality show cast mate.
